Construction of traffic calming measures in Khayelitsha

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate would like to advise residents, road users and businesses of the construction of various traffic calming measures in Khayelitsha. The work started yesterday, 11 November 2024 and will go on until Tuesday, 19 November 2024 between 07:00 and 17:00, Monday to Friday, weather permitting and provided there are no unforeseen delays.

‘The construction of traffic calming measures will enhance pedestrian safety at the Fikelela Children Centre and Mzamomhle Seniors Club along Amos Lengesi Crescent. Other areas that will benefit from the implementation of these measures are Mandela Smart Park, Mount Olives Mission School, Mandela Park Stadium and Inamandla Educare Centre along Tambo Street. Thirteen speed humps will be constructed along Amos Lengesi Crescent and Tambo Street, in Mandela Park. Another six speed humps and a raised pedestrian crossing will be constructed along Makabeni Street and Limpopo Street, in the Khaya and Mxolisi Phetani areas in Khayelitsha.

‘Crash data has identified Makabeni Road as a taxi route and high crash risk road. Three schools, public facilities and a commercial presence are located in the vicinity of the road. The current calming measures are insufficient, therefore additional traffic calming measure will be implemented.’

A raised pedestrian crossing will be constructed next to the minibus embayment before the sharp right bend as well as three additional speed humps along the road.

Raised pedestrian crossings and speed humps on Makabeni Road enhance pedestrian safety, particularly around schools, public facilities and play parks where the highest concentration of vulnerable road users is typically encountered.
All applicable road signage and road markings will be installed and applied as well.
